# Leave policies

A leave policy is the rulebook for one kind of leave — vacation, sick, unpaid, or anything else you track. It decides whether the leave has a balance at all, how that balance accrues, what counts against it, and what happens to leftover hours at period end.

Every employment type points at a set of policies; everyone on that employment type inherits the rules. Start with the policy form, then layer on tiers if your entitlement grows with service years.
