# Break rules

A break rule decides when a break is required during a shift, how long it is, whether it's paid, and whether the worker can leave the workplace. {{ app_name }} attaches break rules to work rules, so a shift inherits the right break policy from its location.

Most teams need only a handful of rules — one for short shifts, one for the standard half-day, one for full-day shifts — and let the priority field decide which applies when more than one is eligible.
