# Shift marketplace

The shift marketplace is the one place where a scheduled shift changes hands. It covers three things at once:

- **Open shift** — a manager posts a vacancy and eligible employees claim it.
- **Give-away** — an employee hands off a shift with nothing in return.
- **1:1 swap** — an employee trades a shift for a colleague's.

Whatever the kind, the vocabulary is the same. Somebody **posts an offer**; anyone eligible sends a **response** (what you'd otherwise call an application); a manager, or the rules, **award** the offer to one of them. Only people who could actually work the shift ever see it — position and location qualification, availability, skills, and confirmed leave are all checked before an offer is shown, and again when it's awarded.

Depending on your policy, a manager approves close-in offers while ones further out are awarded automatically, and an open shift can be set to award itself to whoever claims it first.
