# How to split a shift

**For:** Manager
**You'll need:** A shift with two or more people assigned.

If a shift has multiple people on it and one of them needs to leave early (or arrive late), you can split that person off into a separate shift without rebuilding both. Hold **'Alt'** (**'Option'** on macOS) while resizing.

## Alt-resize in roster (resource) view

1. Open a roster view — for example **'Roster week timeline'**.
2. Hold **'Alt'** (**'Option'** on macOS) and drag the edge of the shift on a person's row.
3. Release at the split point.

The dragged portion becomes a new shift with that one person assigned; the original keeps the rest.

## Alt-resize in week or day view

1. In a week or day view, hold **'Alt'** (**'Option'** on macOS) and drag the edge of a multi-assignment shift.
2. Release the mouse — a person picker pops up listing everyone assigned.
3. Click the person you want to split off.

That person's portion becomes a new shift; the rest of the shift keeps the remaining people.

## Visual feedback

While **'Alt'** / **'Option'** is held during a resize, the shift block shows a split-preview style so you can see what's about to happen before you release.

## Verify it worked

The original shift now has one fewer person assigned, and a new shift appears with just the split-off person.
