# What happens when the kiosk takes your photo

**For:** Shift worker
**You'll need:** Your 4-digit PIN. Nothing else — there's no extra step to learn.

If your company has turned on **PIN + photo** at the kiosk, a photo is taken every time you punch. This article tells you exactly what you'll see at the tablet, what you have to do (almost nothing), and where the photo goes.

## What you see at the tablet

1. Tap your card on the grid, the same as always.
2. A live camera preview appears next to the PIN keypad, mirrored like a mirror so it's easy to line yourself up. A one-line notice under it says what's captured, why, and who can see it.
3. Type your 4-digit PIN.
4. Tap **'Clock in'** (or **'Clock out'**, **'Start break'**, **'End break'**).

That's it. There's **no shutter button** — the photo is taken as part of the punch — and **no retake**. The confirmation screen shows you the photo that was stored.

A photo is taken on every kind of punch, not just clock in.

## The punch always goes through

Your punch is never held up by the camera. If the camera is broken, blocked, or has no permission, {{ app_name }} records the punch anyway and notes that no photo could be taken. The confirmation says **'No photo could be taken — your punch was recorded.'**

You're never penalised for a tablet that isn't working. If you see a **'Camera needs attention'** banner across the top of the kiosk, tell a manager — see {doc}`the-camera-stopped-working`.

## Where the photo goes

- It's stored with your time entry and is visible to the managers of your location, who review it.
- **You can see your own photos.** Open your timesheet, click the finished shift, and the **'Punch photos'** section shows a thumbnail for each punch. You don't review your own photos — that's a manager action.
- Photos are deleted automatically after your company's retention period (between 1 and 90 days). See {doc}`how-long-punch-photos-are-kept`.

## Verify it worked

After you punch, the confirmation shows the photo it just stored. Later, open the shift on your timesheet — the **'Punch photos'** section lists one thumbnail per punch, with the time and the tablet's name.
