# How to rotate or replace a kiosk device

**For:** Owner / Admin
**You'll need:** Access to the kiosk device list.

Two scenarios. Pick the one that matches.

## Rotate the password (same tablet)

Use this when:

- You lost the original password.
- The tablet was used by a temp staff member who left.
- Routine hygiene — quarterly rotation, post-incident, etc.

Steps:

1. In the left sidebar, go to **Planning → Kiosks**.
2. Open the device.
3. Click **'Rotate password'**.
4. Copy the new plaintext password from the success page — it's shown **exactly once**.
5. On the tablet, sign out of the kiosk session and sign back in with the same email and the new password.

The device row, the location/area, and every past punch are preserved. Only the credential changes.

## Replace the tablet (decommission and re-add)

Use this when:

- The tablet broke or was lost or stolen.
- You're moving the kiosk to a different location and want a clean break.

Steps:

1. In the left sidebar, go to **Planning → Kiosks**.
2. Open the device that no longer applies.
3. Click **'Delete'**.
4. Add a new device — see {doc}`add-a-device`.
5. Sign the new tablet in — see {doc}`sign-in-the-tablet`.

Deleting the device also hard-deletes the tablet's login at {{ app_name }}, so a stolen tablet stops working immediately even if no one notices for a while.

```{tip}
Past punches stay on the timesheet regardless of whether the device that recorded them still exists. Deleting a device does not erase history.
```

## Verify it worked

- After rotation: the tablet signs in with the new password and the **'Last seen'** column updates within a few minutes.
- After replacement: the old device is gone from the list; the new one shows up.
