Auto-accrual of night-work credit#

For: Admin You’ll need: Nothing — accrual runs on its own. To change what it accrues, permission to edit the work policy’s Art. 17b block; see Swiss night-work compensation (ArG 17b).

Shiftavo accrues time-compensation credit for you whenever a worker’s time is confirmed on a shift that’s eligible for Swiss ArG 17b (Arbeitsgesetz, Swiss labor law) night-work compensation. You don’t have to post the rows by hand — they appear in the ledger as soon as the time entry is confirmed.

What it does#

When a time entry is confirmed on the Timesheet, the system checks five gates — all must pass (see Swiss night-work compensation (ArG 17b) for the fields):

  1. The work policy’s ‘Time compensation active’ toggle is on.

  2. The shift is on or after the policy’s ‘Ignore shifts before’ date.

  3. The policy’s ‘Time compensation exemption (Art. 17b Abs. 3)’ is not ticked.

  4. The ‘Time compensation rate (%)’ is set (10% on Swiss-seeded policies).

  5. The person qualifies as a regular night worker — the ‘Foreseeable regular night worker’ checkbox on their person record, or at least the policy’s threshold of qualifying nights (Swiss seed: 25) in the calendar year so far.

The decisive gate people miss is the last one: a casual night worker accrues nothing.

If all pass, the system takes the night-band minutes net of deductible unpaid breaks (unpaid, not waived, may leave the workplace), multiplies them by the rate, and posts a positive row to the person’s time-account ledger under the kind ‘Night-work credit’, tagged with the source shift and the source ‘Night-work accrual’.

The accrual is reversed automatically when the hours it was earned on are corrected or removed. ‘Undo confirmation’ on the timesheet removes manually entered or schedule-filled hours and posts an offsetting ‘Accrual reversal’ row pointing at the same source shift. Clocked punches survive ‘Undo confirmation’, and so does their credit. The original positive row is never edited — that keeps the ledger immutable and the audit trail intact.

Note

Unapproving a time entry does not reverse the accrual — the recorded hours are still there. To take the credit back, unapprove the entry, then correct or clear its clock times with ‘Edit’.

When it kicks in#

  • On confirm. As soon as the row leaves ‘Scheduled’ for ‘Confirmed’ on the timesheet, the accrual posts. The basis is the worked time — note that confirming an unpunched row fills its clock times from the schedule first, so those filled times then count as worked. A row closed by the automatic clock-out stays ‘Scheduled’ and earns nothing until someone confirms or corrects it. A shift the person declined never earns credit.

  • On ‘Undo confirmation’. Manually entered or schedule-filled hours are removed and the matching reversal row posts immediately. Clocked punches stay — only the confirmation is withdrawn, and the credit remains.

  • Re-confirm. Punched hours kept their credit, so confirming them again changes nothing in the ledger. Hours recorded again after an undo post a new ‘Night-work accrual’ row. Rows are never edited: a shift’s credit is the sum of its accrual and reversal rows, and the earlier rows stay in the audit trail.

On Swiss-seeded policies (Premiums), the time credit and the night cash premium are mutually exclusive for regular night workers: the ‘Night multiplier is the statutory 25%’ box is ticked and the night multiplier is forced to 1 when the credit accrues. Both apply to the same hour only when that box is unticked — i.e. when the night multiplier is a contractual bonus.

How it shows in the app#

  • The ledger row’s source column says ‘Night-work accrual’ and links to the originating shift. See How to view a time-compensation row.

  • The Payroll summary carries a ‘Time compensation’ column, separate from its regular, overtime and ‘Night (h)’ columns.

  • A reversed accrual shows as two rows in the ledger — the original positive entry and the offsetting negative entry — both linked to the same shift.

Verify it worked#

Confirm a qualifying night shift, then open Company → Time & leave → Time accounts and filter ‘Kind’ to ‘Night-work credit’. A row for that person appears with ‘Night-work accrual’ in its ‘Source’ column, and its detail links back to the shift.
