How to manage tiers on a leave policy#

You’ll add, edit, and delete the rungs of the ceiling ladder on a tiered spell policy.

Tiers never grant anything. They set the per-spell continued-pay ceiling: when an approved spell exceeds the ceiling for the person’s service years, Shiftavo raises a soft warning naming the tier — the approval still goes through. Service years are computed as (reference date − hire date) / 365.25.

Open the tier ladder#

  1. In the sidebar, open Company → Policies & rules → Leave policies.

  2. Click the policy’s row to open its edit form.

The ladder lives in the ‘Tier ladder’ fieldset, sorted by ‘From service year’ ascending. The policy’s read-only detail page shows the same ladder as a ‘Tier ladder (ceiling by service years)’ table.

Add a tier#

  1. In the ‘Tier ladder’ fieldset, click ‘Create tier’.

  2. Enter ‘From service year’ — the threshold at which this tier kicks in (e.g. 5).

  3. Enter ‘Duration value’ and choose a ‘Duration unit’ — Weeks, Months, or Days — the ceiling at and above this threshold.

  4. (Optional) Enter a ‘Label’ — it shows on the ladder and the detail page (“Year 5+ — 5 weeks”).

  5. Click ‘Save’.

Tip

A tier with ‘From service year’ = 0 covers new joiners. Without one, people below the first threshold have no ceiling and get no warning — which is deliberate and correct for ladders like the French one, where continued pay only starts after a qualifying year. Decide per policy whether that’s what you want.

Edit a tier#

  1. Click the tier’s row (the tooltip reads ‘Edit tier’).

  2. Change any field.

  3. Click ‘Save’.

Edits don’t rewrite past warnings — they apply to the next spell that’s checked.

Delete a tier#

  1. Click the tier’s row to open its form.

  2. Click ‘Delete’.

  3. In the ‘Delete item?’ dialog, click ‘Delete item’ to confirm.

Worked example — the Berner Skala#

A Swiss sick-pay ladder: tiers at 0 → 3 weeks, 1 → 1 month, 2 → 2 months, 4 → 3 months, 9 → 4 months, 14 → 5 months, 19 → 6 months.

Lea was hired on 1 March 2019. For a spell ending 20 May 2026, her service years are about 7.2, so the highest rung at or below that is 4 — a ceiling of 3 months, about 12.9 weeks (months count as 30 days, per Art. 77 OR). A spell that exceeds it is still approved, but the review shows a warning naming the tier that was exceeded.

Verify it worked#

The ladder in the fieldset reflects your changes immediately. Approve a spell that runs past the matching tier’s ceiling and you’ll see the soft warning; the booking still commits.
