How to set the sick-leave defaults#
For: Admin You’ll need: A role that covers the whole company and may edit company settings — Owner and Admin can.
You’ll set how sick days are counted at the company level and edit the default sick-leave tier ladder that new sick policies start from.
Open the company settings#
Open the account menu (top-right) and click ‘Settings’.
In the right column, find the ‘Sick-leave defaults’ section.
Choose the counting mode#
Open the ‘Sick day counting’ dropdown.
Choose how a sick day is counted:
‘Calendar days’ — every day of the absence counts, working day or not.
‘Qualifying days’ — only the days the person was scheduled to work count.
‘Working days’ — only the person’s contractual working days count.
Choose when limits reset#
The ‘Calendar year is rolling’ toggle decides when the paid-sick-leave limits reset. It’s off by default.
Off — limits reset on 1 January. This is the calendar year, not your configurable leave year.
On — there is no fixed reset: a rolling 365-day window is counted back from the first day of each absence.
Edit the default tier ladder#
The tier ladder defines how many sick days are paid at each service-year threshold. Under ‘Default sick tier ladder’, click a tier to edit it, or click ‘Create default tier’ to add one.
For the full tier-ladder workflow, see How to manage tiers on a leave policy.
Save#
Click ‘Save’.
Worked example#
Your ladder has two tiers: 0–2 years of service pays 3 weeks, 3–5 years pays 8 weeks. Jonas joined 4 years ago and is off sick for 10 weeks from 1 March — the first 8 weeks are paid, the last 2 unpaid.
With ‘Calendar year is rolling’ off, his 8 weeks reset on 1 January. With it on, the 365-day window runs from 1 March, so his entitlement frees up only as absences fall out of that window.
Verify it worked#
Approve a sick leave request for a person and check that the paid duration matches the tier their service years land in.
